Voltage regulating method of power transformer

Voltage regulation methods for power transformers are crucial for ensuring stable operation and meeting voltage requirements. Depending on the specific application scenario and needs, transformers can employ various voltage regulation strategies. These methods include, but are not limited to:

  • Tap-changer regulation: Adjusting the position of the tap changer on the high-voltage or low-voltage side of the transformer to alter the winding turns ratio, thereby regulating the output voltage.
  • Load-based voltage regulation: Automatically or manually adjusting the transformer's tap changer in response to load fluctuations to maintain a stable output voltage.
  • Induction voltage regulation: Utilizing the principle of induction to regulate the transformer's output voltage by varying the current within the windings.

Each of these voltage regulation methods has its own advantages and disadvantages; the choice of method depends on the specific operating environment and requirements. Through appropriate voltage regulation, power transformers can provide a stable and reliable power output, meeting the demands of various complex power systems.

1. Voltage Regulation Methods

Transformer voltage regulation methods primarily fall into two categories: off-circuit voltage regulation (also known as no-load voltage regulation) and on-load voltage regulation. Off-circuit regulation is typically performed when the transformer is de-energized and disconnected from the load. In contrast, on-load voltage regulation is carried out while the transformer is operating normally and carrying a load. These two methods utilize off-circuit tap changers and on-load tap changers, respectively.

2. On-Load Voltage Regulation Locations

On-load voltage regulation in transformers typically involves three configurations: neutral-point regulation, medium-voltage line-end regulation, and high-voltage winding line-end regulation. Among these, neutral-point regulation is widely adopted due to the relative simplicity of its structure and manufacturing process.

3. On-Load Tap Changers

The on-load tap changer is a critical component of the transformer's voltage regulation system. However, there remains a gap in quality regarding domestically produced on-load tap changers; consequently, these components often rely on imports, particularly products from renowned companies such as MR (Germany) and ABB (Sweden).
